Internal alterations in Hitchin

When our clients approached us about extending their beautiful bay-fronted home, they had a clear vision: transform the long, narrow kitchen into a spacious, open-plan kitchen/dining/living space.

Once we had provided two designs for a single-storey extension, our clients decided to take some time to consider the designs while settling into their new home, to ensure they made the right decision for their budget and lifestyle.

Just over a year later, our clients had settled nicely and realised that although extending would give them more space, it would also mean sacrificing parts of their home they had grown to love, like the view of the garden from their bedroom window and the west-facing patio where they soaked up the last of the evening sun.

So they decided to scrap the extension plans and instead asked us to help them make the most of their existing space. We collaborated to come up with a design that included everything on their wish list.

The kitchen was relocated to the center of the home and the entrance to the dining area was widened to open up the space. The former kitchen became a bright living/dining area with sliding glass doors and a floor-to-ceiling apex window overlooking the garden. Shortening the entrance hall and widening the existing WC also allowed us to include a small utility area.

This project was our first opportunity to offer 3D visuals (pictured). Combined with our 2D floor plans, these helped to assure our clients that the space was adequate for their needs and gave them the confidence to commit to the design.

This project perfectly demonstrates how significant changes can be made to a home without extending. Sometimes all you need to do is rethink the space you already have.
